Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone is having a great start to 2021 and had a wonderful end to 2020. To start this year I thought I would share with you some hope for 2021.

The US will be rejoining the Paris climate Agreement on Joe Biden’s first day of presidency. This will mean that it is possible to achieve the Paris Climate goal of keeping the global average temperature below 2 degrees celsius.

In addition, China has pledged to reach net zero emissions by 2060. This could lower warming by 0.2 degrees. This refers to a balance in greenhouse gas emissions produced and amount removed from the atmosphere. Hopefully, this will have a ripple effect across the world.

In the UK, the first fully electrical ‘petrol’ station was opened on December 7th in Essex. As well as this, plastic waste was much lower this christmas thanks to most high street retailers. This has been achieved by some stores having sustainable Christmas ranges, others removing single use plastic from crackers, lights and cards and eliminating glitter from their own label ranges.

More good news for wildlife includes: humpback whales returning to New York Harbour and one-horned rhino populations increasing in India. In the Indian Ocean, a coral reef cooled by water from deep channels has been discovered. Scientists believe this will provide shelter for creatures escaping warming waters.

There are lots of other environmental wins and many more to come. I hope this has cheered you all up. Have a wonderful 2021!
